An exciting / 'not the norm' nav can really make a site stand out from the others. You can get around using images for the nav using text indent -5000 in the style sheet, so if the css is turned off the text will still appear. Cassandra site looks great, but i agree with TH, try to avoid tables for layouts. I like the use of large images on the site.
