How to create a Rising Sun effect in Photoshop

After a few e-mails asking how I created the rising sun like effect on previous posts headers. I have decided I should make a tutorial explaining how to do it. There are many ways to do this but the technique I use seems to be the quickest.

Firstly I opened a canvas up 600px by 300px, I then filled it a dark shade of orange.

Next I created a new layer by holding Option+Shift+N but you could just as easily press the new layer button shown below.

Now we have a new layer I used a brush I download from the rising sun brush-set which you can download from brusheezy for free. If you don’t know how to install brushes please check out our previous post on Installing Brushes.

Once I had the brush installed I just change the size to suit the canvas choose a lighter shade of orange and placed it in the center of the image.

Now to make sun look like it is fading out I placed a layer mask on the layer by click the button shown below.

Now I added a radial gradient by selecting the gradient tool from the sidebar and changing it from linear to radial shown below.

Now with the gradient on I held down shift clicked in the middle of the sun and drew out to create the fading gradient, which produced the image below.

You can also achieve the same effect by creating a series of vertical stripes and using the Filter -> Distort -> Polar Coordinates filter.
